DC4 – Mauricio Sotelo González

Airbus Netherlands

Mauricio Sotelo González is a doctoral researcher with strong academic and industrial background in control and system modelling. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Electronics Engineering from the University of Granada (UGR). After it, he completed a Master’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Málaga (UMA) where he settled down his interest in system modelling and control design with a master’s thesis about automatic docking of autonomous robots.

After graduation he gained hands-on experience as a Modelling and Control Engineer at Indra Sistemas. He was part of the Free-Space Optical (FSO) Communication team as well as the Electro-Optical Infrared (EOIR) systems team, both as part of the pointing system department. He contributed to system simulations, system requirements assessment and initial laboratory testing in European projects such the Future Aerial Combat System (FCAS).

DC4 – Project research

His research within the FOCAL project will be conducted at Airbus DS Netherlands and TU/e. His research focus will be studying different methods to achieve resilient free-space optical (FSO) communication links and terminals for commercial aircrafts. This includes a system-wide study of the technology challenges for resilient aircraft connectivity such as an assessment of viable network architectures for seamless coverage; analysis of functional and performance requirements for aircraft FSO terminals; and/or full-hemispherical pointing coverage for satellite tracking with very low aerodynamic drag exploring non-mechanical beam steering technologies.
This research will contribute to broadening optical network capabilities by adding new mobile nodes to current Space-to-Ground and Space-to-Space links.
